We believe financial skills have an enormous importance for marginalized children. Bookkeeping courses are one of the basics skills that need to be taught to run a business successfully.

Providing bookkeeping knowledge such as recording, organizing, reporting and interpreting financial transactions will empower children to manage their future savings. Whether it is to pursue studies at the university or to find a decent job position in a business, our objective is to help improve the future generation of the children of the slums.
Teaching financial skills is a first step towards breaking the circle of poverty they were born in.

Mumbai's economy has continued to boom since the last three decades. The megacity has become the 12th richest city in the world in 2018.
Behind this impressive figure hides a whole different reality: the growing gap between rich and poor. Indeed, 12 million people (which represents 55% of Mumbai population) are living in dilapidated conditions in informal settlements better known as slums.
Among these slums inhabitants, we can find 60% of children. Many of these children sleep under bridges and eat what they find in rubbish bins. They are often unregistered and their chance to break the cycle of poverty is limited.

The Khazana Foundation has chosen to help them break this vicious circle by providing them with savings accounts and financial education.

Why do we believe financial education is important for children of the slums?

With its 20 000 small-scale manufacturing units and thousands of unregistered businesses, the 2000 Mumbai slums are constituting a world in itself. A universe that the outside world is largely unaware of.

By teaching the knowledge of cooperative, fundamentals of management, principles of accountancy and principles of banking, the foundation aims to encourage slums, children, to take advance of their economic empowerment and their personal development. We believe that teaching them bookkeeping skills is important. By attending this course, children will know how to record, organize, report and interpret financial transactions.

The final objective of the course is to help children build a solid educational background, so they can find a job whether it is in or outside of the slums.
